"I Am More Than My Hip" Jill Miller

  1. Can you stop being at battle with your body? Both Jill and I have struggled with body dysmorphia, and the idea that a good or bad day was defined by what we ate or how much we worked out. With the holidays already here and New Year just around the corner, we can all feel at war with our body. Can you take the time over the holiday season to make sure you are not at battle with yourself? Enjoy the festivities without the guilt and without the silent promises of eating perfectly come January 1st. Simply be in your body, be in the moment, and be in love with the body that you are in right now.
  2. Jill encourages us all to listen and honor our bodies, to get quiet and really hear what our body is yearning for. How is your physical moment, your exercise, your wellness routine? Are your workouts something that you look forward to, that your body feels good doing, and where you feel great afterwards. Take the weekend and the holidays to move, breathe and gift your body with exercises and fitness plans, that nurture both your body and your spirit.
  3. Overuse, Underuse, Misuse or Confuse. Jill talks about her methodology, which is a process based movement format that can work with any type of body. She shares the blind spots that we often have in our own body: Overuse, Underuse, Misuse or Confuse. Are you overusing parts of your body? Do you have certain areas that have become underused due to sitting too much? Perhaps you have a chronic annoyance, a tweak or a pain that keeps coming and going. Maybe this is the time to really work with your body and not try to bypass any injuries. The next time you are exercising, investigate if your body feels balanced and aligned both during and after your workout.
  4. Who are your cheerleaders? Jill talked about the support she received form her students and also the Fitness Managers at Equinox who believed so deeply in her work. She shared the importance of having cheerleaders in our corner who will help us keep going when things get tough and who will believe in us even when we doubt ourselves. Take a moment to think who your cheerleaders are. Now take a moment to think about someone who may need you to cheer them on. Can you step in and step up, and hold them up until they believe in themselves as much as you do.
  5. Be delighted in the unexpected. Jill talked about working with another great thought leader Kelly Starrett. While they came from two completely different worlds in terms of movement, they ended up working together to create additional educational and motivational ways for people to feel at ease in their bodies. We often stay working with the people who are doing the same things that we are doing. Is there someone who inspires you, who is not in your normal circle of influence? Could your reach out to them and see if they would be open to brainstorming with you? If that feels too outside your comfort zone, can you find a new book or TED talk that is outside of your normal go to topics? Allow yourself to be surprised and delighted by the unexpected and unfamiliar.

"Don't Be At Battle With Your Body" Jill Miller

What an honor to speak with longtime industry leader Jill Miller. In this conversation Jill shares her backstory of being overweight as a young child. She has experienced the bullying that comes along with not being a part of the "in" crowd, and talks about the pain that came with not fitting in.

It was Jane Fonda Videos that her mother was working out to, that moved Jill from the couch to a life of exercise, but they also introduced her to a powerful way to control both her body and her life. Both Jill and I have struggled with body dysmorphia, and we touch on the eating disorders that consumed our life. Jill shares that her body was a symptom of the deep wounds that many of us experience growing up, and candidly opens up about her long journey back to true health and wellness.

We discus how movement can either be a weapon or a powerful tool, and it is up to us to listen and honor our body. Jill shares her reasons for developing Yoga Tune Up® and The Roll Model® Method and the heart and hustle that was needed to get her knowledge into the world on a large scale. She talks about her desire for people to feel good and comfortable in their own bodies, and that this was the main inspiration for her to keep forging ahead. Jill was determined to create an adjunct way of treating and healing the body, one which could be used in tandem with any other type of movement.

We talk about what it took for her "overnight" success: from her start when she was solo and traveling all over the country, city to city, studio to studio to today, where she now oversees more than 500 Yoga Tune Up Teachers. Jill talks about her methodology, which is a process based movement format that can work with any type of body. She shares the blind spots that we often have in our own body: Overuse, Underuse, Misuse or Confuse.

We discuss what it takes to keep moving forward when you have people pushing against your beliefs and what it takes to let the the negativity slide away and to keep believing. Jill shares the importance of having cheerleaders who are rooting for you and that for Jill, many of her greatest supporters were her students and the Group Fitness Managers at Equinox.

We wrap up the conversation talking about Jill’s recent hip replacement. At the time of this recording she was only Five weeks post operation. Jill shares the vulnerability and the lessons that have come through this pivotal moment in her career, and how she is determined to use this for good. She also realizes that she is much more than her "hip."

"It's Never Too Late To Become A Better Version Of Yourself" Mo Hagan

  1. Mo talks about the importance of knowing her why and it is her why that keeps her inspired day after day, month after month year after year. I believe that passion keeps our inspiration tank full and that our passion and our why do not need to be monumental to make a huge difference in our life, and in the lives of those we serve. What is your why? Have you spent the time recently to connect with your values, your passions and the things that fuel your dreams. Perhaps your passion and why comes through your family, your work or by helping others. I invite you to spend some time this weekend asking yourself what fuels your tank of inspiration – and what ever that is make sure to carve out the room for it to flow into your life.
  2. How healthy are your workouts? Mo talked about the realization that as much as she encouraged others to take the time to listen to their body that she had ignored the signs of arthritis in her hips. We all know the importance of moving for our health and also for our brain but are we don’t always take the time to make sure that what we are doing is what our body needs. If you are a type A personality and do high intensity workouts every day – your body may be craving some lower intensity movement, and if you are in yoga class 6 times a week perhaps your brain would love a bit of a boost. Take some time to look at your fitness program and make sure that not only do you move with good alignment but that your workout is in alignment with the needs of your body.
  3. How busy are you being busy? Mo talks about how she had become so busy “doing” that she had neglected to spend anytime “being.” Ten years of her life had slipped by, with many magnificent moments and accomplishments being notched on her timeline, yet she could barely recall any of them. How busy are you? Are you able to stop – pause – reflect and be in the moment. While we all have to accomplish certain tasks and routines and have job requirements-this weekend can you take the time to be. Be without your technology, be with yourself, be in the moment and be.
  4. Mo tells us "to learn as you earn" and encourages us all to get out of our head and into the world, and to surround ourselves with people who we can learn from as we gain more experience. We often want to wait until we know it all or it feels like the perfect time to begin, but what if the best way to start was to start. Is there something you have been delaying? Is there something you could already be doing while earning money and while also learning at the same time? Perhaps now is the time to stop reading and begin doing? Act "as if" and become the person you wish to become.
  5. Mo said it is never too late to become a better version of yourself, is there something you are not doing, not trying because you think you are too old, too unhealthy, or are simply too afraid to do? If it is your health - what is one thing you can do this weekend to move closer towards being the best version of you. If you think you are too old – never forget that age is just a number, and now may be the perfect time to take the leap. If you feel too afraid can you dive deeper to see what is lying under your fear. Perhaps journal this weekend to uncover what it is that you are truly afraid of - so you can step into the best version of you!
